Whitby Film Society present 120 BPM / Thusday 28th February
France 2017 Director: Robin Campillo Cert: 15 Winner Cannes Grand Prix 2017

Robin Campillo’s superb story of Aids activists in the 1990s is a celebration of the invigorating value of collective resistance. Centring on the activist group Act Up-Paris, it serves as a snapshot of those who resisted in the early days of the disease’s global pandemic. Set over a couple of years in the early 1990s, 120 BPM follows a dozen or so core members of Parisian Act Up as they plan and execute a range of actions and interventions, from dishing out sex education in schools to apparently turning the Seine blood-red.  The activists’ interventions are wry and scrappy, quite glorious when they land, somewhat absurd when they don’t.

The film shows how Act Up lobbied for legislation, research and treatment for those with HIV/Aids, while also tracking a tender romance between two of its members.

Whitby Film Society presents “I Am Not A Witch”

Thursday 10/01/19

In this daringly satirical parable of magic and misogyny, superstition and social structures, a nine year old girl in a remote Zambian village is accused of being a witch and given a start choice: to accept her supernatural branding and live a tethered life as a sorceress or to cut her ties with local tradition and be transformed into a goat that may be killed and eaten for supper.

Although the story was apparently inspired by real-life reports of witchcraft accusations in Zambia, “I am not a witch” is also a work of fairytale invention.

Doors open 7.15pm for a 7.45pm start
Tickets : £6 on the door
