Whitby Film Society presents “I Am Not A Witch”

Thursday 10/01/19

In this daringly satirical parable of magic and misogyny, superstition and social structures, a nine year old girl in a remote Zambian village is accused of being a witch and given a start choice: to accept her supernatural branding and live a tethered life as a sorceress or to cut her ties with local tradition and be transformed into a goat that may be killed and eaten for supper.

Although the story was apparently inspired by real-life reports of witchcraft accusations in Zambia, “I am not a witch” is also a work of fairytale invention.

Tom Houghton – “The Honourable”

Published by under Uncategorized

Tom Houghton – “The Honourable”/Friday 25th January 2019

The 2017 sell-out, critically acclaimed star of BBC, Comedy Central, and Channel 4 presents his second show, reminiscing on growing up and discovering that true honour often lies where you’d least expect.

Tom’s just been made ‘The Honourable’. Not by his own merit (he’s been sacked from Wetherspoons twice) but the traditional aristocratic way, by default.

Basically, his dad, ex-Chief of Defence Staff and current Constable of the Tower of London, was inducted into the House of Lords, making Tom “honourable”, apparently.

As seen on BBC1, BBC3, Channel 4’s “First Dates Hotel” and Comedy Central’s “Roast Battle”.

Doors Open 7.30pm

Tickets £10 available from the Coliseum Centre or online at the Hilarity Bites website.

Whitby Film Society presents “The Florida Project”/Thursday 8th November

Director : Sean Baker (America 2017 Comedy/Drama)

A child’s sense of wonder is at the heart of this story of people living on the impoverished fringes of Florida’s tourist traps in run-down, gaudily painted “projects”. In this wonderland, Moonie, Scooty and Jancey run free, exploring all parts of their world.

A superbly sympathetic portrait of marginalised experience-welcome to Moonee’s world.

Doors open : 7.15pm for a 7.45pm start

Tickets : £6 on the door
